You can download it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ialeia.org\/docs\/Psychology_of_Intelligence_Analysis.pdf\">here<\/a> for free.<\/p><p>Dick Heuer is the inventor of ACH and to anyone who wants to learn more about ACH, I highly recommend reading the original. Here is the step by step guide of the Analysis of Competing Hypotheses:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-c354f90 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"c354f90\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-a43b1bf\" data-id=\"a43b1bf\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-cbf1c17\" data-id=\"cbf1c17\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7e0a3ca elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7e0a3ca\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Step 1)<\/strong> The starting point is as complete a set of hypotheses as possible (i.e. of possibly true explanations for an event, a development or similar). So start by identifying the possible hypotheses to be considered. Use a group of analysts with different perspectives to brainstorm the possibilities.<\/p><p><strong>Step 2)<\/strong> Make a list of significant evidence and arguments for and against each hypothesis.<\/p><p><strong>Step 3)<\/strong> Prepare a matrix with hypotheses across the top and evidence down the side. Analyze the &#8222;diagnosticity&#8220; of the evidence and arguments&#8211;that is, identify which items are most helpful in judging the relative likelihood of the hypotheses.<i> So here<\/i> I compare each hypothesis with all the evidence, facts and assumptions that influence my thinking about the case. Thus, I apply each piece of information \/ data etc. to each hypothesis and ask myself the question, &#8222;To what extent would I expect to see this information, assumption, etc. if the corresponding hypothesis were true?&#8220;<\/p><p>The evaluation options are:\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a01) I would expect that: C (for consistent) or CC (very consistent)<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a02) I wouldn&#8217;t expect that: I (for inconsistent) or II (very inconsistent)<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a03) Not applicable: N\/A<\/p><p><strong>Step 4)<\/strong> Refine the matrix. Reconsider the hypotheses and delete evidence and arguments that have no diagnostic value.<\/p><p><strong>Step 5)<\/strong> Draw tentative conclusions about the relative likelihood of each hypothesis. Proceed by trying to disprove the hypotheses rather than prove them.\u00a0 In the end, the most likely hypothesis is the one with the least evidence against it (which has the fewest Is), not the one with the most evidence for it (which has the most Cs).<\/p><p><strong>Step 6)<\/strong> Analyze how sensitive your conclusion is to a few critical items of evidence. Consider the consequences for your analysis if that evidence were wrong, misleading, or subject to a different interpretation.<\/p><p><strong>Step 7)<\/strong> Report conclusions. Here, too, tests, examinations and questioning are used to try to exclude possible diagnoses (Dr. House and team send their regards <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/14.0.0\/svg\/1f468-200d-2695-fe0f.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udc68\u200d\u2695\ufe0f\" \/> ).<\/p><p>So with the ACH, I can develop a sense of the most likely explanation even in complex or confusing situations. It is the Swiss army knife of analytical techniques.<\/p><p>The ACH is not a simple technique, but one that is worth having in your toolbox. If you look at the hypothesis set of Digital Shadows, you will notice that the hypotheses H3 and H4 are not completely mutually exclusive:<\/p><p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0H3:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0A nation state or state-affiliated actor conducting a disruptive operation<br \/>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0H4:\u00a0\u00a0A nation state or state-affiliated actor aiming to discredit the National Security Agency (NSA)<\/p><p>Why? Because I can conduct a disruptive operation in order to discredit another actor (here the NSA).<\/p><p>Sometimes you can&#8217;t avoid having hypotheses that are not mutually exclusive. However, there may be difficulties in the execution of the ACH or in the result in such cases, because unclear results may be obtained. From there the threat actor discovered the internal network before moving laterally to a domain controller for additional discovery. It is very interesting because it is not related to security: It is about data analytics or customer behavior.<\/p><p>Moe Kiss shows a (simplified) example where the question is:<\/p><p>&#8222;Why aren&#8217;t more mobile site users moving to our iOS app?&#8220;<\/p><p>So we&#8217;re moving way outside the realm here of what you might think of as the ACH.
